John Bubber (Andy Garcia) is the homeless character, not Bernie Laplante (Dustin Hoffman); Laplante lives in an apartment. One of the points the movie is making is that Laplante, a lowlife loser who always looks out for No. 1, is capable of rising above himself and saving 54 people from a burning airplane.
