1)When Detective Dressler killed several SS officers. Then his caring neighbor checked in with him and even though both knew what was really going on, the neighbor allowed Dressler to choose his own fate.
2)When Franz Schmidt was checking the hidden box on the stairwell (his banking colleague had left-the communist) and was apparently "captured" by the SS, only to find that the plenipotentiary saved him by sending his assistant to kill the SS officers and said, "Two less" (of the bad guys).

This book, set in 1936-37 Germany is one of the best.Just finished Jeffrey Deaver's GARDEN OF BEASTS, but it pales to this story.Absolutely a must read...written by Australian Marshall Browne, you can't find it in most booksellers, unless you live in NYC.Get ready for the ride of your life!
