Pedantic posts on 7/9/2011 3:41:19 PM Heinlein did not write a bad book in his career IMHO, however, he did write books that were less than good, again, IMHO. For example, "Friday" seemed to be a book without a point. And though I admit my personal faith might have had something to do with it, I did not at all like "Job, A Comedy of Errors." "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" seemed to me to be a book meant to shock rather than entertain, though it did that as well. And there are a few others written later in life that I found stylistically well-written but falling short in the entertainment department--mostly because in later life it seemed that he thought that the best way to make money (so it seemed from this vantage point) was to write books that shocked the blazes out of its readers. He even alludes to such motives in his epilogue to "The Number of the Beast" ("That man will do anything to make money!") I will say, however, that, despite its controversies, "Stranger" is probably the best SF novel ever written, pre 1970s, and deserves half again as many accolades as it has already gathered.
Stephen Walsh posts on 6/30/2011 10:33:24 AM Hello people, I am a recent discoverer of the unalloyed storytelling genius of Robert A. Heinlein and wanted to share my thoughts with like minded individuals. I'm not an internet geek and only really ever posted stuff on Facebook and RCMB (Ramsey Campbell being my fav horror writer) but I wanted to braodcast my admiration of this great writer and my thoughts on his work to the universe at large. Hope that passes muster? So far I have read the novels: 'Methuselah's Children', 'The Star Beast', 'Tunnel In The Sky', 'Starship Troopers', 'Stranger In A Strange Land' (twice, it was my intrigued intro in my teens and recently re-read [unexpurgated] at the grand old age of 45), 'Glory Road', 'Farnham's Freehold' & 'Job : A Comedy Of Justice'. My fav of those is torn between the last two mentioned but I'm beginning to believe the man is incapable of writing a bad book! Thanks for listening. Stevie.
Cyn posts on 12/28/2010 10:50:56 AM CITIZEN OF THE GALAXY... ======================= Does anyone have, or know of, a "lexicon" for Citizen of the Galaxy? We are using it for an advanced ESL class this year and I want to be sure we are translating the terms correctly. THX!

Milo D. posts on 10/4/2009 4:43:53 PM How come no one anywhere in the posts, indeed not even in the supposedly exhaustive list of books by Robert A Heinlein mention "The Number of the Beast?" I read it years ago when I was ~18 and it is so fantastic it has always stuck with me and kept my mind open.
posts on 7/21/2006 6:32:50 PM I finally found out that what I read when I was a young girl, Universe, was actually the first book of Orphans of the Sky. I've been looking and looking for it. It's been many years since I read it but was totally facinated. I didn't even know that it was written by Heinlein, my favorite author. Did you read it a long time ago and never forgot Joe-Jim?
