Alice and Doug are wealthy New-Yorkers living a very self-centered life of social schedules and empty occupations. Suffering from a backache, Alice pays a visit to the famous Dr. Yang who, after having hypnotized Alice, finds out that the cause of the suffering is psychological. It is caused by the shock produced by Alice's catholic education and her longing for some diversity in her life. Dr. Yang gives Alice some herbs that produce strange effects such as invisibility ot the ability to talk with the ghost of her first love. She also loses her inhibitions while seducing Joe Mantegna, a saxophonist, with whom she begins a love affair. She discovers that her husband Doug is cheating on her for years and decides to leave him for Joe Mantegna.
