Richard Gere plays Julian Kay, a high class male escort in Los Angeles. He enjoys an expensive lifestyle and is much in demand among his wealthy (and older) clientele. He is well-dressed and charming and doesn't think too much about his ‘work.'

One of his admirers is Michelle Stratton, played by Lauren Hutton. Julian is accused of killing a ‘trick', the client he was really with refusing to offer herself as an alibi as she doesn't want to get involved. Sunday is the investigating police officer, who believes he is guilty of the murder. Julian realizes that someone has framed him for the murder, and the pressure gets to him. He even neglects his appearance. He has an encounter with Leon, who tells him another gigolo really committed the murder and he, Leon, had framed Julian. Julian pushes Leon and accidentally kills him. When Julian is thrown in prison and is waiting for his trial to begin, Michelle sacrifices her reputation and that of her husband's and gives him an alibi.
