The setting is Russia, during WWII. Thanks to an act of heroism, Private Aliusha Skvortsov obtains the permission to visit his mother and leave the front for 6 days. On his way home, he'll get acquainted with a crippled soldier, with the adulterous wife and the father of one of his companions of war and with a young girl whom with he'll begin an innocent love story. Because of numerous delays, he'll finally see his mother only to leave her a few moments later in order to get back to the front.
