Soon after the Atriedes landing on Dune, a traitor allows the Harkkonens to capture the Duke. Paul and his mother Jessica escape into the desert.

Deep in the desert, Paul and his mother come into the company of the Fremen, nomadic people native to Dune. Their legends speak of a man who will come with his Bene Gesserit mother and lead them to victory and prosperity. They believe Paul is that one, Mahdi, as they say.

Paul learns the ways of the Fremen and in time assumes leadership of them. They grow powerful enough to challenge not only Harkkonen, but also Imperial authority.
