Michael J. Fox plays Danny, a professional bowler. Nancy Travers plays his girlfriend, a broadcaster for ABC sports. Kirk Douglas plays his Uncle Joe. Uncle Joe is getting on in years and is starting to get forgetful. Uncle Joe is also enormously wealthy. He has no children of his owns, but he does have a number of cousins who are just circling the wagons waiting to get their cut of his pie. They talk Danny into cozying up to Uncle Joe to try to get into his good graces so that he will leave them the money. Danny would get a cut of course. They also want to make sure that Uncle Joe's "companion" Molly, played by Olivia D'Abo, does not get all the money. But as Danny gets close to Uncle Joe, who he hasn't seen since he was a child, he finds that the cousins aren't people he would be proud to call relatives. In fact, he finds out the lengths they will go to in order to get Uncle Joe's money. He has to figure out how to get control without seeming greedy himself, then soon learns he has real affection for his Uncle Joe.
