I Am Sam Movie Review Summary

Actors: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning, Dianne Wiest

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of I Am Sam

I Am Sam is about a father trying to prove to the court system that he should have custody of his daughter, Lucy. Sean Penn gives an amazing performance as Sam. Sam is a bit slow minded but has a huge heart and an infinite amount for his daughter. After an incident at Lucy's birthday where Sam acts irrational some people felt that Sam and Lucy should be separated. Sam finds a lawyer who will take his case for free and the battle begins. There is no mother but a very cold lawyer and a family that wants to adopt Lucy. Sam's lawyer has a son who she neglects because of work and a cheating husband. The movie parallels the two families to show that just because one has success and is intelligent does not mean one is a better parent than Sam would be. The movie is heartbreaking at moments but definitely has a beautiful outcome.

This movie is about a mentally challenged young man who takes in a homeless girl. The girl becomes pregnant and, after having the baby girl, leaves the man to raise her. The state steps in and takes the little girl away when she's about 5. The dad fights his way through the legal system to win her back.

I think this movie shows the true insight of what a mentally challenge person feels. It shows how no matter who you are you can love someone or something. The most amazing thing about this movie is how not only does it tell a story about a mentally disabled man who wants custody of his daughter, but it also shows how some people can be to caught up in there work or own lives to be able to consider their child's life. The way they intertwine these two topics is incredible. Sean Penn is unbelievable in portraying a man with the mental capacity of a 7 year old, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer who is not use to playing an unlikable character, but of course you learn to love her throughout the film. Also featuring Dakota Fanning and Dianne Weist. Every person is incredible and deserves every award they are nominated for. Its an uplifting, moving, touching, and even a funny movie. It just reaches out to everyone in every way. I love this movie and believe everyone should go see it.
