Hostage negotiator Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) is a man in a bind. His girlfriend is pressuring him to propose and the flames of an Internal Affairs investigation are licking at his heels. His one and only chance at redemption may be to coax Russell and his gang out of the bank.
Bank chairman Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer) is a man with a secret, a secret buried in safety deposit box number 392 in the bank being robbed by Russell and his gang. Desperate to keep the contents of that box away from both the criminals and the cops, he hires a shadowy power-broker named Madeline White (Jodie Foster) to retrieve the box.
As Frazier and his men match wits with the robbers on the inside and the machinations on the street, will they be able to catch Russell and find the secret of box 392? Or will the wily criminal mastermind keep his promise and escape the bank by walking right out the front door?
