The main character of this very stark, bleak and deadly serious film is so out of touch with reality that she (Geraldine Page in an Oscar nominated performance) literally vies for her family's attention by pulling out all the stops and alienating her daughters and her estranged husband even further. E.G. Marshall is magnificent and somber as the husband, as is Maureen Stapleton as his love interest. This film is a 5 hanky tearjerker, and is outstanding on all levels.
