The Lelievres, wealthy members of the french bourgeoisie, desperately need a new maid for their large house. Jacqueline -Catherine Lelièvre- Bisset hires Sandrine Bonnaire who seems, at first, to personify the dream of any hostess. Discreet, hard-working, Sandrine locks herself in her room and watches television as soon as she's finished her task.
One soon understands that this young girl is illiterate and suffers from this situation. She's concealing this fact to everybody but, everyday, her job forces her to invent improbable excuses that stress her.
The young maid makes the acquaintance of Isabelle Huppert who's in charge of the local Post office. Both become friends and, after a few weeks, Sandrine is beginning to rebel against Georges Lelièvre, her employer.
