The couple is killed in a car accident which makes Eric and Holly co-guardians of the child. A social worker convinces them that it would be better to keep Sophie in the home she is used to, and raise her there, than to move her to a new environment so soon after the loss of her parents. For the good of the child, Eric and Holly agree to move in to the house where Sophie currently lives and share the responsibility of taking care of the child.

They don't like living together. It also costs more than they thought to take care of Sophie. Holly starts to date Sophie's pediatrician which makes Eric jealous. He calls him "Dr. Love" to deride Holly's interest in him. In spite of themselves, Eric and Holly fall for each other. Eric helps Holly with some money for her business. They go out on a date and when they return home, they make love. Eric is offered a job in another city. It's a big career move for him. While he is thinking about it, Holly finds out. She gets angry because he does not consult her.

Eric goes to Phoenix for the new job. But at Thanksgiving he returns to Atlanta. He finds Holly in relationship with Dr. Love and that they plan to sell the house where Sophie lives. Eric realizes he loves Holly. He tells her. Holly realizes she loves him also and that she cannot raise Sophie properly without him. Dr. Love understands the passion they have for each other and gracefully bows out. The social worker shows up to do a final check to see if Holly and Eric will make good parents, but Eric has gone to the airport to return to Phoenix. They go to the airport to stop him, but the plane already left. When they return home, Eric is there. It is clear Holly, Eric, and Sophie are destined to be a family.
Best part of story, including ending: It is fun to see the transition of Eric and Holly hating each other, to when they fall in love.

Best scene in story: When a stranger see Eric watching a video of Sophie with Holly and comments that he has a nice family, that is when Eric realizes what he is giving up by going away to Phoenix. It's a nice moment.

Opinion about the main character: Eric becomes a much better person as the movie progresses.
