The setting is a small Sicilian town in 1940. Renato, a 12 years old boy, falls violently in love with Malena, the superb daughter of his latin teacher. Malena's husband is in the army and the unusual beauty of the young woman attracts the attention of the whole town : sexual desire among men and hate among women. Renato fantasises a lot about Malena and starts to go out at night in order to secretly observe her through a hole in her window.
When the small town learns about the death of Malena's husband, a quasi-sexual hysteria seizes the population and, soon, Malena has to go to court because the local dentist's wife has pressed charges against her for having embezzled her husband, which is, of course, false. In the meantime, Renato keeps on spying on the young woman and desperately tries to discourage the men who are getting around Malena. The young boy hopes that Malena, thanks to his vigilance, will still be free for him in a couple of years.
