After Martin's family dies, he is taken in by his granduncle Tateh Cuda. Cuda forbids Martin from talking to Christine, his cousin, and treats Martin like a monster, trying to repel him with garlic and telling him that if he kills anyone in town, he will be staked through the heart.
Martin takes a job in Cuda's butcher shop and bestrides up a relationship with a customer, Mrs. Santini. But Martin's vampiric desires are eventually too much, and he starts to stalk women in the streets of Pittsburgh, drinking their blood.
Martin is confused about women, routinely calling into a radio talk show hosted by “The Count” for advice on the subject - and explaining to him that vampires do exist.
For a while he is able to suppress his desires, but eventually they become too much - making Martin confront his appetite for blood, his interpersonal relationships and face the wrath of an angry Cuda.
