The movie is based on the story of Carl Brashear, the first African American navy diver, who must struggle to prove himself against the tests of the navy and the discrimination he faces as a black man. Billy Sunday, the master chief who trains him, is initially Brashear's most formidable opponent, but gradually develops a grudging respect for the young navy man. When Brashear becomes victim to a horrible accident aboard ship, the two become allies in the fight to keep him in the navy.
