The United States is in the midst of World War II. In New York City, a plain and retiring secretary named Ruth Wood meets a handsome soldier by chance. The dashing and lively private, Arthur Hugenon (Johnson), from Tennessee is out of his element in the big city and convinces Ruth to spend the day with him. They are soon spending more time together and falling in love. Hugenon is shipped abroad. Ruth attempts to stay in touch with him, but his letters stop. He doesn't return. She presumes him dead and stops taking care of herself, then falls ill. It will take a miracle for Ruth to recover from her illness and heartache.
