This is a beautifully crafted film which evokes serious reactions. Halle Berry's stunning performance tells of a life that is collapsing before her eyes with complete loss of control. With a series of disasterous events including her husband and son being murdered, fate links her to billy bob thornton, who excels as a delusional prison officer who falls deeply in love. Dealing with issues including the death penalty and racial tension, this is fiml deserved much more credit than it recieved.

Based on a screenplay directly written for the screen, MONSTER'S BALL is a movie directed by Marc Forster in 2001.
Academy award for Halle Berry in the "Best Actress in a Leading Role" category.
Billy Bob Thornton and his son Heath Ledger are wardens in a State Penitentiary. After a serious fight, the son commits suicide in front of his father and Peter Boyle, his grandfather. Billy Bob resigns from his job and makes the acquaintance of Halle Berry, the widow of Sean Combs, a black convict recently executed. Billy Bob learns to be more sensitive but has to deal with his aging racist father he takes care of.
In my opinion, the best american movie of 2001.
