The young John Mohume is sent by his dying mother to Moonfleet with a letter destined to her former lover Jeremy Fox. Fox is a smuggler well introduced into the respected houses of the region. One night, young John discovers the tomb of Red Beard and, hidden in Red Beard's coffin, an enigmatic text that will lead John and Jeremy Fox to the place where Red Beard has hidden his famous diamond just before dying.
