Owen Walters is a young kid (12-14) who has cancer. He is befriended by Mr. Rice. After Mr. Rice's death, Owen finds a letter addressed to him in Mr. Rice's house. He discovers that it is a secret code that he must break. Owen must go on this tresure hunt while dealing with his hectic life which includes: violence from other boys, trips to the cancer ward, and his fear of death. Throughout the movie, Mr. Rice teaches Owen life lessons about death and morality.
