Charlotte is a mousy and bitter spinster, whom everyone in the family takes advantage of, until she goes away to a mental hospital for a nervous breakdown. At the hospital with the help of a doctor, she attains confidence in herself. On a cruise going home, she meets a man whom she falls in love with, but he is married. The remainder of the movie consists of Charlotte controling her feelings and trying to make a happy life for herself.
