Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Practical Magic

Based on a book by Alice Hoffman

Sally and Gillian were raised by their aunts after their parents died. They knew that they were different from being allowed chocolate cake for breakfast and being taught how to use magic.   But this magic also brings a price with it, that the men they love are doomed to die an untimely death.

The women grow up and are very different people. Sally is quiet, marries and has two children. Gillian has moved away and is enjoying life. But when Sally's husband dies, Gillian comes home to help Sally grieve and move on. Gillian is in a relationship with Larry but when Larry hits her, she has had enough and she calls Sally to come help her. But when they try to leave, Larry grabs Gillian and holds her hostage and Sally has to go with.

The plan is to knock Larry out and leave him behind but Sally adds too much of a spell to the drink which causes Larry to die. They bring him back to their home and decide to bring him back to life but the reincarnated Larry is even worse so they kill him again and bury him.

But then Gary shows up looking for Larry.   He knows that the sisters have something to do with Larry's disappearance and shows up looking for him. By now, Larry is possessing Gillian and they need to banish him. As a result, Sally ends up forming a coven and brings the townspeople into it to help; they just know that Gillian has a man who won't leave her alone and they are going to help. Ultimately, it is up to Sally to save Gillian which she does by talking to her and repeating an oath they made when they were younger. At the same time, they are able to break the curse affecting the men that they love.

Best part of story, including ending: Magic is something that people are always curious about. But it shows that magic can have a dark side to it.

Best scene in story: Sally's girls helping their Aunt Gilly make a potion and keeping an eye out for their mother.

Opinion about the main character: Sally is a strong woman but she is not willing to allow her daughters to acknowledge a large part of who they are, witches. She forgets that it is not something that they have any control over and that they need to learn to use and embrace it.
