Carla is a secretary in a property development company. She is almost deaf, have earing aids and is able to read lips. One day, overworked, she faints at the office and she's allowed then to hire someone to help her. She meets Paul, an ex-convict, and decides to keep him even if he doesn't have any particular skills. She's soon attracted by the young man who'll help her to settle a few scores in the workplace.

A few days later, Paul is forced to accept a job, not paid, as barman at Masson's night-club. Masson had lent him money in the past and wants Paul to pay him back now that he's got out of prison. Paul notices that Masson is regularly seeing well-known robbers so he asks Carla to discreetly observe them and read their lips. Thus, Carla will have the opportunity to steal the loot of a recent robbery in Masson's apartment. Unfortunately, a furious Masson suspects Paul of the larceny.
