Seemabaddha is the second film in Satyajit Ray's "Calcutta trilogy" and explores corruption in the higher rungs of the corporate world. Shyamalendu Chatterjee (Barun Chanda) is an upcoming executive in a multinational fan-maker named Hindustan Peters. Driven by relentless ambition, he is rapidly climbing up the corporate ladder and along with his wife Dolan (Paromita Chowdhury), leads the high life of scotch whisky and race horses.

When Dolon's sister Tutul (Sharmila Tagore) comes from Patna to stay with them for a few days, she too gets a taste of this upper class lifestyle. Shyamal feels comfortable to share with Tutul details of his professional life which is now in overdrive. But when a huge consignment of fans due for export under his supervision turns out to be faulty, Shyamal's quest for becoming the company's director falls into serious jeopardy. He confides in Tutul and tries to find a way of bailing himself out of the situation. Desperate not to lose his professional standing, he finally compromises on his ethics and along with a corrupt labour officer, stages a strike in the factory. In course of time, the matter is resolved and Shyamal becomes the director of the company. But he realizes that in the eyes of Tutul - he is now a fallen man.
