Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a single New York executive who is a sex addict. He engages in casual flings, threesomes, homosexual encounters, prostitute sex, online sex, magazine and internet porn. His world is disrupted when his troubled sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) stays at his apartment. He is faced with the shame of hiding his indulgence. Both are emotionally damaged, with Brandon seeking fleeting intimacies, whereas Sissy searching for that one deep connection. Both try to become better people but with great challenges.
