Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw is a middle-aged woman who often finds herself having a conversation with her kitchen wall than with her own husband Joe or their grown children. Joe hardly takes the time to appreciate his wife and give Shirley the love and affection that suppose to keep a marriage alive. Her children offer no support as her son Brian often dedicate his time to street poetry and daughter Millandra only comes around when she is in need of a handout.

Bradshaw's life is on a standstill while she constantly dream about the long gone days of being a young, happy and confident woman. But things will make a turnaround for Bradshaw as her independent friend Jane wins a trip for two to an all round trip to Greece. Jane encourages her to go, reminding Shirley that her marriage to Joe is slipping away and even tells her a funny story of how she left her own husband after finding him in a intimate relationship with the milkman.
After a few moments of trying to decide if she should drop her domestic duties and head off to a exotic place, Shirley agreed to the trip. A very much fun and relaxed vacation brought a smile on Shirley's face, especially that of a attractive Greek hotel manager named Costas Caldes that offer to take her out on a friendly date on his brother's boat. However the date led to something more than what she expected yet it was everything she wanted and did not have in her marriage. During her stay Shirley begin to have a newfound sense of self and respect which she lacked for a long time.
