Their studio head envisions their current silent film as a 'talkie'. This is a complete flop until Don's ex-song-and-dance partner, Cosmo (Donald O'Connor) suggests turning the doomed film into a musical. There's one major problem, however - the temperamental, catty, self-centred Lina Lamont has a shrill, screechy New York accent. To solve this problem, they decide to use the voice of Don's dancer-girlfriend, Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds).
The hilarious pair manage to outwit Lina, pacify Kathy, and turn the musical into a raging success.

Gene Kelly plays a stuntman-turned-actor about to make the transition from silent films to talkies. But while Kelly has a wonderful voice perfect for singing Broadway musicals, his witchy co-star Lena (Jean Hagan) has a high-pitched voice perfect for shattering glass. Thanks to Lena, Kelly's career in the talkies is quickly going down the tubes. But when Kelly falls in love with a beautiful singer played by Debbie Reynolds, he hits on a great idea -- let Reynolds dub for Lena's voice! Everything seems wonderful -- until Lena discovers what's going on and tries to make Reynolds sign a contract that will make her dub for Lena's voice -- permanently! Now Kelly must find a way to free Reynolds from the contract, without putting his own career in jeopardy!
