Zachary Hutton is an internationally acclaimed writer addicted to casual sexual conquests. Catching him with Angie, who is jealously holding a gun to his head for scoring with Tina, his wife Alexandra kicks him out and files for divorce. His writing has dried up. He drinks too much. His stepson and mother-in-law are disgusted with him. He feels guilty. He still loves Alex. He tells both his bartender and his psychiatrist that he can't go on like this: He is determined to stop chasing beautiful young women. Then he drives by one, stares, and crashes his car. She resuscitates him and sells him a house, which he christens with a bout of impotence. Vengeful girlfriend Molly burns the house down around him.

Reminded of his own mortality when his agent dies, he wants to reach out to Alex; but as he's phoning her from a restaurant, he makes flirty eye contact with a stranger named Amy. His subsequent glow-in-the-dark fight with her jealous rock musician boyfriend lands him in jail. Learning Alex is engaged to another man, he gets soundly drunk and wakes up miserable in the back of Barney's bar. He follows a pretty woman to a spa and runs into Molly, now employed there. She spitefully gives him electro-stimulation treatment at a dangerously high level. Driving away in spasms, he smashes into a bus while staring at a model on a billboard. He tracks the model to a "costume party" he doesn't realize is actually a black tie event, and, feeling ludicrous in his Aladin costume, goes on another drinking binge. He disrupts Alex's wedding, telling her he feels like he's drowning and only she can save him. She tells him she cannot. He begs his psychiatrist for advice, only to be maddened by the cryptic replies. Deeply depressed, he rents a beach house. There, something his psychiatrist said suddenly makes sense to him.
Months later, he is at a party at Barney's bar. He has quit drinking, written a best seller, and been celebate for months. He is merely congenial to his ex-conquests, but vows to Alex that he will win back her trust yet. His sincerity is quickly tested when a young fan - his stepson's girlfriend - makes an overt pass at him.
