The setting is a military camp, reserved to Afro-American soldiers, in Louisiana in the year 1944. After the murder of a sergeant, Washington sends Capt. Davenport to the camp in order to find out what happened. The soldiers are convinced that the Ku Klux Klan is to blame while the white military hierarchy is trying to dissuade Davenport from looking too far into the case. Davenport will question the soldiers of the company one by one and soon discover that Waters, the murdered sergeant, was hated by most of his men.
