In pre-Revolutionary France, two sets of twins are born on the same night, in the same doctor's home. One set of twins is noble, the other peasant. Confused as to who is who, the doctor mixes the twins up, and thus each set of twins is made up of one nobleman and one peasant.

Thirty years later, the peasant twins are revolutionaries, and the noble twins are plotting to overthrow the king. Still unaware that any mix-up occurred, both sets of twins end up at Versailles, where many cases of mistaken identity occur, and the peasant twins try to stop the Revolution.
