The restauranteur agrees to sell the business and let Stroker out of his contract if he throws the race.Once Stroker begins driving poorly and trying to loose, the restauranteur announces to the media that Stroker is fired. Burt Reynolds plays Stroker Ace, a slick race car driver. Jim Nabors is his sidekick. Ned Beatty is his owner, and Loni Anderson is his secretary, in charge of promotions. Unfortunately, part of Stroker's deal is he has to appear all over the south in ridiculous costumes and on stupid ads. He and his partner cook up a scheme to rid themselves of their shady boss. The only trouble is, he might have to lose the most important race of his career to do it.
