Larry, a middle-aged writer, breaks up with his dancer girlfriend and joins the ranks of "lonely guys" - men who are desperate to meet a good woman but for some reason can't. Like other lonely guys, Larry resorts to tricks. He learns that getting a dog doesn't help: it does draw the attention of women, but they are interested in the dog and not the owner. Another trick is pretending to be a jogger. As Larry does that, he does meet a pretty woman, Iris. Iris sees right through it: her ex-husband used to be a lonely guy who got her by the jogging thing. Nevertheless, Iris gives Larry her phone number - which he loses.

His life of a lonely guy continues even after he writes a book, "A Guide For Lonely Guys," which becomes an instant bestseller. Popularity does not solve Larry's problem: he can have women and sex, but he cannot find that one special woman to spend the rest of the life with. One day, he meets Iris again in a restaurant. They start dating and everything seems to go very well, but Iris is very afraid of her growing attachment to Larry. It turns out that she has had six husbands, so she fears that this relationship will not work, either, and she will only get hurt again. Larry is too good. She says she needs someone she doesn't care for, so that it does not hurt that much when she is dumped again.
Iris runs off. The story repeats itself several times, with her coming back and leaving again, until she supposedly leaves for good by marrying someone else. Larry goes to jump off a bridge - and so does Iris, who has run away from her new husband she does not love. They meet and finally stay together.
