This story is told by Otis Williams, the last surviving member of the original Temptations. Otis hooks up with his brother Paul and best friend Melvin Franklin at their Detroit high school, and Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin would follow later. Together, they win a talent show, get admired by the girls, and sign with the Motown label. The film explores the pain of making hit records, and the pressures of being popular. When Dennis Edwards replaces Ruffin as the lead singer, the group undergoes a huge change. Edwards didn't like Papa Was a Rolling Stone, because he felt that it offended the memory of his own father. Berry Gordy moves Motown to Los Angeles, Paul Williams commits suicide, and Ruffin, Kendricks and Franklin also die.
