Guy Pearce stars as Dr. Sam Franks, a psychologist who deals with lost love. When Sam's father dies he goes back to Victoria, Australia to bury him. Along the way he meets a woman on the train named Ruby (Helena Bonham Carter). They talk briefly and then she disappears from his car. After the services for his father Sam once again sees this woman on top of a bridge. Sam watches her fall into the water and in a heavy rainstorm he dives in and saves her from being drowned. He takes her to the home of his deceased father. She doesn't remember meeting Sam on the train. Throughout the movie we go to flashbacks of Sam as a young man with a pretty young crippled girl.
