Shy, beautiful April Delongpre (Fenn) has just graduated from an exclusive Southern college. She returns home to her wealthy family's mansion to prepare for her semi-arranged marriage to a man named Chad Dowling (Hewitt) whom her father, a senator, deems as appropriate for his daughter. April, on the other hand, is less than enthusiastic about the upcoming nuptials and is not completely sure that Chad is the right man for her.

Unbeknownst to her parents, April sneaks away one day and goes to a local carnival where she meets two people- a sexy and muscular worker named Perry (Tyson)and his friend, Patti Jean (McNichol). April and Perry are immediately attracted to one another. Soon April and Patti Jean become friends while the fire of passion ignites between two people from very different worlds. April and Perry begin a highly sexual relationship and before long he is taking her to new heights sexually, and places she had never known before, with any other man. Patti Jean is all for the relationship and wishes them well.
Upon discovering the truth about the relationship that April had tried her best to keep hidden, her parents are mortified. A muscle bound, practically illiterate carnival worker is not the kind of man they want their educated and refined daughter to be associating with. They try to talk sense into her but April refuses to listen and continues meeting Perry for erotic liasions. Feeling pulled in two different directions, April must reconcile the expectations that her family has for her with the desires of her own heart. She must decide what is more important to her- her feelings for Chad or the passion she feels for Perry.
