Frances Ha is a thoroughly charming coming of age story from Noah Baumbach and starring Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script together. Shot in gorgeous digital black-and-white, the film follows Gerwig's Frances through a series of adventures after a break-up of sorts with her best friend (Mickey Sumner) that includes a Chinatown apartment with two affable male roommates (Adam Driver of girls and Michael Zegen), struggles with her job at a dance studio, a brief sojurn to Paris, and a return to college. Less mumblecore and more French New Wave, Baumbach shifts the focus away from romantic relationships, more interested in self-development and growth.
