Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) go on a trip to Japan to visit the latter's father who is dying. Mr. Miyagi faces his old enemy Sato, who is a businessman/crime boss in the island. He also revisits his first love. Daniel on the other hand befriends a young Japanese teen Kumiko who tours him around the island and teaches him about Japanese culture. Their budding romance, and Daniel's presence irritate Chozen, who is Sato's errand boy. As Daniel and Chozen clash, so do Miyagi and Sato, causing trouble in the fishing village. The rivalry culminates in an elaborate battle during a Japanese festival, with Daniel showing poise and honor, mixing both eastern and western sensibilities.
