Anthony Elliot, the Earl of Greyley, has just inherited five troublesome children, and he cannot find a governess who will stay to manage the rowdy bunch. Sara Montrose, Alex's half sister, suggusts he hires Anna Thraxton, gentry who recently turned governess due to poverty, even though he and Anna have a history of disliking each other. Anna, after much persuasion, takes on the role of governess for Anthony. Anna is a specialist with misbehaving children, and she get results almost immediately, even though she struggles with the oldest prankster child, Desford.

As Anthony sees the fiery Anna work, his attraction grows for her, and he often finds himself dreaming of her. Anna, also, is highly attracted to Anthony, even though she thinks him to be overbearing and high-handed. As the two battle each other and their attraction for each other, they find their dislike/attraction turning into love, but behind the scenes is an evil calculating aunt, who wants custody of the children for their inheritance. She tries to tear Anna and Anthony apart, even as they consumate their passion.
