Katya is a Russian aristocrat on the brink of the Russian Revolution. As her cousin Misha slowly introduces her to the horrors of peasent life, she is sent to be companion to The Last Grand Duchess, Anastasia. Katya and her mother are ladies-in-waiting, and friends to the Empress Alexandra and The Grand Duchesses. Russia enters war with Germany and the revolution takes place. She is with the royal family as they are sent into exile in Siberia, and is kicked out and forced to go back to her old home, "the Oaks" where she must live like a peasent to survive.

Katya is a young girl growing up in Russia just before the Revolution. She is wealthy and privilaged, and her mother is a lady-in-waiting to the Tsar's wife. Katya and her mother move to the palace, where Katya becomes a friend to young Anastasia and her sisters. But war and revolution destroys her sheltered life forever.
