As a young woman Randall keeps everyone at arms length till the day she meets, and falls in love with, the man she is to later learn was hired by her mother to locate Randall.
Despite this shocking and tumultuous beginning to their relationship Randall and Brian do become involved (tho their relationship is never easy) but Randall refuses to reconcile with her mother.
However, during the following year the love Randall receives from Brian softens Randall and over time substantial changes occur within her. At the end of their first year together Randall agrees to see her mother - for the first time in seventeen years!
The end of the book is this emotionally charged reunion.
The book shows how love (even with all its problems) can transform a person and heal them enough to allow forgiveness in a heart, where once there was only hatred.
