    Arabella Hadley, on her way back from a smuggling job, runs a rider off his horse, whom she discovers is Lucien Devereaux, the Duke who had ruined her ten years before and left her for another woman. Lucien has returned to Yorkshire to investigate a traitor who is going to smuggle in jewels to sell for Napolean's coffers. Arabella takes Lucien to her home to recover from his injuries, and her two meddling aunts decide to try to throw the two together.

    Arabella and Lucien have a lot of history, which includes love and betrayal. Arabella is still angry at Lucien for leaving her and marrying someone else and Lucien has to deal with the guilt he feels for leaving Arabella and marrying another woman so he could refill his family coffers.
   Arabella comes to forgive Lucien, but the two become involved in the smuggling plot, which Arabella falls into accidently. As the danger from the traitorous smugglers mount around them, the couple find themselves falling back into love.
