Sethe is a runaway slave living with her kids and an old lady. Sethe was abused a whole lot by her master, so she took off with her kids and has tried to live a decent life ever since, but a tragedy has kept her from being happy- namely, when she was almost captured by her master she killed her little girl to keep her from being a slave. The master thought she was looney, which she was, so he didn't bother bringing her back to the plantation. Now, years and years later, weird things have started happening, the dog goes crazy, her sons run off, and a young black woman comes to stay. It isn't long before it becomes evident that the young woman is Sethe's murdered daughter come back to life, and she's a little pissed that she missed out on her mother's love. An interesting read.

Toni Morrison has done a superb job in describing the fears and the dilemma of the black people in the slavery-era in the form of the main character, Sethe. A highly recommended American literary masterpiece
