In a desperate attempt to keep her in Kansas, Charmaine's father throws a ball so that Charmaine can meet a husband. Ash's visiting godfather helps disguise him so that he can attend the party. Ash and Charmaine dance happily, but at the end of the evening nobody has any idea who the masked stranger was.

Charmaine's father believes the stranger has compromised Charmaine, and so sets out to find him and make him marry her, with the help of a lost boot. Ash and Charmaine are forced to marry. Although they begin to fall in love despite the forced marriage, Charmaine still wants to retain her independence, and Ash struggles with feelings of not being worthy of Charmaine.
