Over the many summers they spend there, Maude however, grows to love the Colony, as she learns to cherish the people who share it with her. There is her husband, Peter, consumed with darkness of spirit; her adored but dangerously fragile children; her domineering mother-in-law who pounds it into her head that the women are to keep the Colony intact. Then also in the story picture is Micah Willis, who is ultimately Maude's truest friend.
This brilliant novel is rich with children's troubles, emotions, and filled with appealing, intense, and indomitable characters.
