Timothy Zahn creats a future human society that crash landed on a world that caused the children of their society to develope extrodinary telekentic powers which eventually disappears with the on-set of puberty. It is a world where, in order to retain controll over their youth, education is denied children until they begin to loose these "Teeking" abilities. The pr-teen main character, becomes embroiled in kidnaping,a religious cult, deception and revelation in her efforts to find the whereabouts of the boy who secretly taught her to read.
