Kitty also becomes attached to Karen, a young refugee who becomes like a daughter to her when the hunger strike is successful and they manage to get into the county. There Kitty must deal with the fact that both of the people she loves are completely committed to working for a country for their people in spite of the great dangers. They see themselves as soldiers in a greater battle. In the end when Karen is killed by Arab fighters, Kitty must decide whether she can also devote her life to this greater cause.
