But when Kit comes home to London, he finds Evelyn's affairs in a very sorry state - Evelyn has disappeared, leaving a fiance behind. If Evelyn doesn't come back in time for a dinner with Chressy (the fiance) and her grandmother, Evelyn won't be able to marry her. Kit soon finds that Evelyn's engagement to Chressy is a marriage of convenience - Evelyn needs to marry in order to escape a rigid trust placed on his inheritance, whilst Chressy is eager to remove herself from the vicinity of her mother in law.
