When Jeff sees Sara at the funeral, he invites her back to his house and convinces her to spend the night. They sleep together, and Sara immediately regrets it. Jeff then surprises her by asking him to marry him again. She is hurt to learn that her friends had a daughter, and Jeff only wants to marry her so he can adopt the baby. Reluctantly Sara agrees, and they are married. Sara flies back and forth to New York to run her business and also opens a branch from her new home.

Everyone is shocked by Sara's new confidence, including Jeff. He finds himself falling back in love with her, while she feels the same. Neither wants to admit it to the other, and they continue to have a love hate relationship. They continue to sleep together, but neither is fulfilled.

While they are both in New York for a charity ball, their nanny calls to tell them their daughter is sick. They rush back to California to care for Elizabeth. Sara nurses her back to health, but she is so run down she becomes ill too. Jeff insists that she see a doctor, and a doctor tells Sara she is pregnant. Jeff tells her its okay with him if she has an abortion, but he really would rather she have it and let him be a part of the child's life. Sara is furious that Jeff would think she would have an abortion, and tells him that she won't leave until he kicks her out. That is exactly what Jeff wants to hear, and they finally tell each other how they really feel.
