This is the second book in the Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas, It Happened One Autumn chronicles the courtship of Marcus Marsden, the Earl of Westcliff, and Ms Lillian Bowman, the daughter of a wealthy American soap manufacturer. At the beginning of the book, Marcus and Lillian have already had several run-ins at the various social functions they frequent and have taken an instant dislike to each other. He thinks she's ill-mannered and out to trick some unsuspecting Englishman into marrying her; and she thinks he's a stodgy and arrogant aristocrat who likes to run roughshod over the people around him. Their customary interaction is to trade thinly veiled insults at each other.
All that is about to change, however, when Marcus hosts a house party at his country estate. Much to Marcus' chagrin, he finds himself becoming increasingly more attracted to Lillian; and Lillian, in turn, begins to see through Marcus' stony facade to the man underneath. Still, their mutual attraction seems a failure from the start as Marcus is determined marry a wife with the right bloodline and pedigree to bear him heirs. How will Lillian convince him that she's actually the right woman for him?
