The book revolves around how Sydney Henderson lives and dies by his ideals because no matter the consequences he will stand firmly by them. As a child Sydney Henderson's life was changed dramatically when he pushed another child, Connie Devlin, of a church roof for stealing his molasses sandwich. He made a deal with God that if he let this child live he would never in any way hurt another person again.
